Beginning in 1988, the Masterpieces in Silver series was produced until 2011 in Canberra. This long running coin series is dedicated to Australian events, themes and famous persons that have helped to shape Australia as a nation. The Masterpieces series came in many forms, often with silver plaques and varying numbers of coins. The coins were always produced as proof grade and ship with presentation boxes.

Each piece has been designed and struck to the highest possible quality standards by the Mint.
The reverse side of the Aboriginal coin was designed and sculptured by Wojciech Pietranik while the other four reverse designs were designed and sculptured by Vladimir Gottwald.
The obverse design is the traditional portrait of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II by Raphael Maklouf.
